IPC, otherwise known as Pelindo II, on 2nd September 2014 announced its plans to work with property firm Jababeka to develop a cruise ship terminal and marina in Banten. The $50 million USD project was formally set in motion following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by Mr R.J. Lino as President Director of IPC and Mr S.D. Darmono as President Director of Jababeka, which took place at the IPC Head Office in Tanjung Priok.
As detailed in the MoU, the agreement between the two industry-leading companies will involve the construction of a cruise ship terminal, marina, and supporting facilities at Tanjung Lesung Port – an area designated as a special economic zone by the government in 2012. Initial reports suggest that the project is to be located on 40-50 ha of land, and will see the development of 600 docks (300 for villa owners in the area, and 300 for the general public). As a means of further facilitating the rise of Tanjung Lesung as a premier tourism destination, land will also be allocated towards the development of malls, hotels, and residential property. IPC and Jababeka expect total investment in this project to be shared equally at 50% each, and have set their sights on completion by 2017.
IPC’s track-record as a leading provider of port management services will prove to be an invaluable asset in the construction and management of the project’s main attraction, a cruise ship terminal strategically positioned amid pristine beaches and only 180 km away from Jakarta. Its development is in keeping with the government’s target of drawing 500,000 cruise ship passengers to Indonesia per year in the near future, up from the 200,000 expected in 2014.
