PT Pura Mayungan (PM) has become the first ISO 50001: 2011 Energy Management System certified company in Indonesia by TUV Rheinland having been awarded the certificate in February 2013. The company’s efforts to gain this certification are in support of the Indonesian government and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources Regulation No. 14 of 2012 on Energy Management.

The ISO 50001:2011 system focuses on energy management with regards to integrated activities to control energy consumption, use energy efficiently and to produce the best possible output.

The ISO 50001:2011 certification aligns with the ISO 90001:2008 and ISO 14001:2008 certifications. It is implemented through Plan-Do-Check-Act:

1. Plan; the company defines the energy performance that it has to achieve.
2. Do; the company improves its energy usage and energy efficiency.
3. Check; the company verifies the determined system and whether the result aligns with the defined energy performance targets.
4. Act; the company carries out an energy management review. If the result does not align with the plan, the corrections and improvements must be made on an on-going basis.

The scope of energy monitoring that Pura Mayungan (PM) provides is for electrical energy use by manufacturers and commercial buildings. This type of monitoring makes it easier for companies to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve their environmental management.

Pura Mayungan applies the Energy Management system for:

1. Controlling energy efficiency in every production process:

   This system helps to save electrical energy usage as electrical energy is the most widely used energy source in Pura Mayungan’s production processes. To achieve energy saving and cost saving, Pura Mayungan involved all of its employees so that they have awareness to control their own energy usage.

   The continuous controlling of this system is based on the conditions of the ISO 50001:2011 certification. The company also determines its own Energy Performance Indicators (EPI), objective, targets and action plan. Based on the analyzed baseline, Pura Mayungan determined its electrical energy efficiency at 5% of average consumption for the August – December 2012 period.

2. Conducting an Energy Audit with the Energy Management System:

   Pura Mayungan provides solutions on how to measure the consumption of electrical energy for industries and commercial buildings. This is for the installation of an Energy Management System to help customers to use electrical energy more effectively. Pura Mayungan also provides consultancy services to its customers to help them obtain the ISO 50001 certification.
