BNI Syariah on 5th April 2015 launched Kartu Migran Hasanah, an ATM card which enables Indonesian migrant workers across the world to carry out transactions at ATM terminals and merchants that display the MasterCard logo. Kartu Migran Hasanah was officially introduced during a launching ceremony held at the BNI Gallery Building in Hong Kong. To mark the event, Vice President of MasterCard Indonesia, Mr Tommy Singgih, presented a mock-up of the new ATM card to Mr Imam T Saptono, Business Director of BNI Syariah, which was met with an enthusiastic response from a crowd of over 200 Indonesian migrant workers.

During the event, Mr Imam T. Saptono spoke about the advantages of having a Kartu Migran Hasanah. Indonesian workers overseas, he said, will be presented with a multitude of services that facilitate greater convenience. “Through a BNI ATM terminal in Hong Kong, migrant workers will be able to pay a variety of bills for their families in Indonesia, the zakat, as well as carry out cost-free fund transfers with other BNI Syariah accounts,” he explained. In addition to the aforementioned benefits, the ATM card can also be used for purchasing activities at merchants that display the MasterCard logo, which offers migrant workers added security as opposed to carrying cash.

BNI Syariah’s decision to launch Kartu Migran Hasanah was motivated by the presence of a several millions-strong prospective market consisting of Indonesian workers living overseas. In Hong Kong alone, there are an estimated 160,000 Indonesians making a living, mostly in the informal sector, for which a significant portion of their earnings is sent home to their families on a regular basis. This provides an immense opportunity for BNI Syariah's remittance operations.
