Electricity consumption in Indonesia is forecast to more than double by 2025, and pressure to guarantee that this demand is met without incurring negative externalities for the country’s environment requires that more attention is paid to developing renewable sources of energy. In line with this shift towards renewables, Surya University offers multiple programs within its Clean Energy & Climate Change (CECC) Faculty that have in common the ultimate goal of ‘safeguarding the future of the planet’ via the harnessing of alternatives to fossil fuels.
The Physics & Energy Engineering program specialises in the design and fabrication of technology used in power plants fuelled by geothermal energy, solar energy, wind power and hydroelectricity. Courses in advanced topics including Computational Fluid Dynamics as well as those that offer hands on experience such as Industrial Project Management creates graduates with the technical ability to succeed as post graduate degree candidates at top universities around the world. Surya University students in the Physics & Energy Engineering Program can select from between four different concentrations: Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Geothermal Energy and Hydro Energy.
The CECC’s program in Biochem & Energy Engineering is designed for students more interested in the application of topics in chemistry, biology as well as biotechnology to create value added products for a variety of industries. With concentrations in Fluid Biofuels, Solid Biofuels, and Microbial Fuel Cells, this program is well positioned in a country increasingly enamoured with palm oil and sugar as sources of fuels used in industry and transportation. Graduates in Biochem & Energy Engineering will leave Surya University with the skills to work in a diverse array of sectors in addition to Energy & Biofuels, such as Mining & Minerals, Industrial Polymers & Biopolymers and Waste Water Management.
Other programs offered by Surya University’s CECC Faculty include Environmental Engineering, which presents students with the opportunity to choose from concentrations in Energy Management, Smart/Green Building, Water & Waste Water Management, and Forest Conservation & Climate Change.
The CECC Faculty is among the most productive divisions at Surya University when it comes to the publication of studies in leading international journals – a fact corroborated by the recent publication of a study on the Dynamics of Desorption with Lateral Diffusion by professors from the Physics & Energy Engineering Department in the esteemed Journal of Chemical Physics.
