A growing population and government led move towards biofuels has in recent years propelled Indonesia’s agribusiness industry to the forefront of the economy. An abundance of natural resources and arable land dictate that Indonesia is already positioned as the world’s largest producer of commodities such as palm oil at 26.5 million tonnes per annum with scope to rise to 40 million by 2020. Demand for human resources ready and able to contribute to the advancement of this type of industry through the implementation of advanced technology and knowhow is thus greater than ever before; thereby creating new opportunities for students pursuing studies in agribusiness.
Designed to train students on the business nuances of the food industry as well as cash crop agricultural commodities and their derivatives, Surya University’s GEDC concentration in Agribusiness enables students to gain first hand laboratory and field experience through course offerings such as Farming Technologies and Horticultural Science. This bodes well for the development of business leaders capable of tackling issues such as low per hectare yields of palm oil plantations. Students also benefit from business focused courses including Agricultural Finance, Commodities and Futures Trading, and Managerial Accounting.
